A good summer day is full of micro adventures - sun, sweat and sweets. I was thrilled when I was asked to plan one heck of a micro-adventure in Tamworth NH! Beers in boats, sips and bites, and free live music, what more could you need!? Luckily we have some dear friends in the area we could crash with, but if you're looking for a place to stay there are some great inn's and campgrounds nearby!
Stop 1: The Lyceum
Our first stop when we arrived in town (after a 90ish minute drive from Portland, ME) was at The Tamworth Lyceum - our favorite destination in the area for post-hike coffee's and London Fog's (theirs is to die for!) but today we snagged lunch - a BLT for me on homemade Gluten Free bread and a pulled pork sandwich for K. An iced coffee hit the spot and we grabbed some Narraganset beers from the beer fridge for our afternoon adventure.
Stop 2: Tamworth Distillery
After the Lyceum we walked down the road a few minutes past the cute library and local theater hall and arrived at the Tamworth Distillery. We enjoyed a tasting of a handful of their spirits - I loved the Chicory Root Vodka the most which I could picture paired with ginger beer in the summer or as a part of my famous hot toddy recipe in the winter. Kaleigh preferred the Beet Root Vodka which was as bright in color as it was in flavor.
Stop 3: Kayaking on Chocorua Lake
We drove 15 minutes down the road to Chocorua lake - a spot that's most excellent for small crafts because no motorized boats are allowed. We unpacked our Oru Kayaks, grabbed a few beers and our pup and paddled about on the lake. The views of Chocorua mountain are STUNNING and we may have done more beer sipping than paddling but it was well worth the excursion - after a quick dip in the lake - which felt so lovely compared to how freezing the Atlantic still is near Portland, Maine we headed back to our friends house to shower and pack a picnic for the evening show!
Stop 4: Picnic at the Free Concert
The Ghost of Paul Revere, a Maine based folk band played to the town of Tamworth and more who packed picnics and children and sprawled across the lawns and gardens behind the Lyceum and Distillery. People danced, the sun cast a golden glow across the lawn and the energy was one of pure summer fun. The sun set as the band played their final songs and I really couldn't have asked for a nicer summer day to spend in an adorable town like Tamworth.
It's The Bee's Knees
We brought a bottle of the Tamworth Garden White Mountain Gin home and whipped up one of our favorite summer cocktails, our take on a prohibition era cocktail: The Bees Knees.
One part gin, one part lemon juice, and one part honey simple syrup (1/2 honey and half hot water). Shake, pour over ice and add a splash of club soda or sparkling water. Enjoy!
Thank you to the Lyceum and Tamworth Distillery for feeding us and quenching our thirst. As always all opinions expressed are my own.
